Known in Bengali as Narikel Jinjira (Coconut Island), St. Martin's is a tiny dumbell shaped coral reef that only covers three square miles (two at high tide) of the Bay of Bengal. Almost all of its 5000 inhabitants depend on fishing as as a livelihood, although a recent census showed that in addition to this were 163 shopkeepers, 27 farmers, 8 technicians, 3 labourers and a barber.
