Kaptai Lake is situated in the area of southeastern Bangladesh, near the Burmese border, known as the Chittagong Hill Tracts. In terms of religion and ethnicity, this is the most diverse area of the country, with an ancient, animist form of Buddhism still being practised among some Marma and Chakma clans. Since the 1970s, however, there have been violent disturbances as some of the minority tribes try and react against the influx of Muslim Bengali settlers.
