Potter's Son, Shaanxi Province

Nestled amid rice terraces in the loess hills of Shaanxi Province is the pottery village of Chen Lu. Pottery is so much in the fabric of the village that many of the walls are made out of ceramic urns instead of bricks, and people live in domed shaped houses in the style of kilns. Pots that would fetch a tidy sum in a nearby city lie discarded by the side of the paths, and even the pillows they sleep on are ceramic. The characters on this pot say 'Happy Earth' in the archaic writing system known as seal script.
