The legacy of Sardinia's 400-year period as a Spanish colony can be most easily traced in a fishing town in the north-west, called Alghero. In the narrow, cobbled streets of its old quarter, surrounded by hispanic influenced gothic archiecture, you can still hear, along with Italian, the local Catalan dialect being spoken.
