Although most Indian cities have a maidan (field), none are as large and essential as the one in Kolkata. One of the largest city parks in the world, it previously belonged to the elite and even had a dress code. Now, normal people come in the mornings to meet friends, practice cricket or yoga, while shepherds graze their flocks and riders on horseback canter about. It is the lungs of an otherwise overcrowded, polluted city. It also contains some of the finest remaining examples of Raj-era architecture in India: the gothic steeple of St. Paul's Cathedral is actually modelled on the Bell Harry tower at Canturbury Cathedral in England.
