The triangular leaf packages sold on tiny street stalls all over India, contain a sweet, and mildly narcotic, mixture known as paan. Consisting of chopped areca nut, katha (red paste), chuna (slaked white lime), sweet spices or chewing tabacco and wrapped in a betel leaf, it is taken as a digestive after meals. Paan-wallahs ply a busy trade expertly filling each leaf with different combinations of ingredients.
