Kathakali - literally 'story-play' - is the most famous of Kerala's many forms of indigenous drama. Highly stylised, with elaborate make-up and costume, the immediate spectacle is as impressive as the choreography is complex. There are seven main character types: all distinguishable by the colour and design of their make-up. This is one of the kari ('black') characters: the witch Nakrathundi who assumes the form of a beautiful maiden to woo Prince Jayantha.
