In the Vajrayana (Tantric) Buddhism found in Nepal, there are five 'self-born' buddhas that have existed since the beginning of time. Ratnasambhava ('the Jewel-born One') unites the 'three jewels' that make up the primary statement of Buddhist faith: dharma (doctrine), Buddha and sangha (community). He is often seen in threefold form, his right hand open in the varada mudra (gesture symbolising charity) while his left holds a gemstone.
