Makara gargoyle, Bhaktapur

There is scarcely a district in the Kathmandu valley without a water spout adorned with a carved makara. More specifically a sea monster than its Sri Lankan counterpart, it personifies the life-giving essence of water. Its distinctive curved snout can also be seen on jewellery, wine-jugs and temple walls, where its image alone is enough to ward off evil spirits.
