Because it flowers all year round, the distinctive sight and fragrance of the frangipani are common in Sri Lanka. Although its colour varies from pure white to a deep red, the saffron-hued version, as the sacred colour of Buddhism, is the most popular. Along with lotus blossoms, they are called pansal mal (temple flowers) and brought as offerings to be laid at the feet of statues of the Buddha.
