In 1900 there were 12,000 elephants in Sri Lanka; now there are less than 2500 in the wild. Although 30% of the land in the country is protected for wildlife, a swelling human population and the resultant demands on resources and space have led to over 100 animals dying every year as a direct result of conflict with humans. They can be a threat, however, especially to farmers trying to protect their land. Several baby elephants end up at places like the Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage every year.
