Moonstone detail, Polonnaruwa

photo only

A carved stone doorstep seen at the entrance to many Buddhist temples, the moonstone is a typically Sri Lankan architectural detail. The intrictately decorated semicircular rings are full of symbolic motifs such as elephants, birds, plant tendrils and lotus flowers. The best moonstones at the ancient cities of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura are seen as some of the finest examples of early Sinhalese art.
