Ancient Sinhalese inscription, Polunnaruwa

Due to the tough but fibrous nature of the readily available ola (palm) leaf, early Sri Lankans didn't use writing paper. The leaves, however, were vulnerable to splitting when straight lines were used, and a script developed that was comprised entirely of curved strokes. This made for elegant writing, but must have made carving inscriptions in stone a bit laborious.
