The famous and unique spires of Lichfield Cathedral - known locally as the three 'Ladies of the Vale' - have been a distinctive icon for the city since the fourteenth-century. The central spire was demolished by Cromwellian cannonballs during the Civil War, but later reconstructed with royal funding under the supervision of Bishop Hacket.
